Barbara Allen Goins

GOINS, Mrs. Barbara Allen age 76, of Dayton, a lifelong educator, wife, mother, mentor and friend to many, passed away December 30, 2011. Barbara was born July 28, 1935 in Harlan, Kentucky to the late Willie and Annie Mae Allen. Barbara was the third of five sisters: Dorthea Baldwin, Pearl Crawford, Dora Ross and Panolia Lanier. She attended Rosenwald High School where she excelled academically. She obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Music Education at Kentucky State University and later received her Master's of Science in Education from Wright State University. Barbara began her teaching career at Rosenwald High School and later relocated to Dayton where she taught at Longfellow Elementary School. She served as a supervisor at Wright State University, an assistant principal at Loos Elementary School, supervisor of ESAA Title VII program, implemented effective teacher training, assistant principal at Cleveland Elementary, Cornell Heights Elementary and Fairview Middle. She, also, served as Principal at Fairview Middle and Meadowdale Elementary. Additionally, Barbara taught graduate classes at Antioch University. She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church. Barbara leaves to mourn, her devoted husband and friend of nearly 60 years, Francis Goins; children, Jeffrey (Betty), Stanley, Sharon, Kevin (Deanna) and Karla Goins. She was a sister-in-law and aunt to a host of nieces and nephews. Funeral service will be held 12 noon Thursday, January 5, 2012 at New Hope Lutheran Church, 2000 Catalpa Drive. Pastor Andre E. Keeley, Sr. officiating. Interment Dayton National Cemetery. Visitation 9 a.m. Thursday at the church until the time of service. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service. Hester Sanford:
Hester Jane Cotton Sanford was born July 19, 1951 in Harlan, Ky. to the late Louise S. Cotton and Willie Cotton. She was a devoted Christian who loved serving the Lord. She was an active member of the Immanuel Baptist Church where she enjoyed working with the children's ministry.

Hester loved teaching Bible stories in Junior Church on Sunday mornings and the Master's Club on Wednesday nights. She realized the value of missionary work, telling real-life missionary stories about boys and girls from all over the world. Although she had heart problems, she went door to door inviting boys and girls to attend summer camp.

Hester attended Rosenwald and Harlan High Schools, and she graduated from the Kentucky Business College. She was employed at Mack's Family Center and Western Auto at Baxter, Ky. for many years. She then started her own business, Hester's Upholstery Shop, which she owned and operated for over 25 years. She was known for her crafts and jewelry creations as well. For all those who were blessed to know her, she was a loving, caring soul who opened her heart and home to anyone.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by three brothers: Chester Wayne, Eddie James and Lester Wayne; one sister, Yolanda Yvette; and one step-daughter.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 35 years, Robert Sanford, Sr.; one son, Robert Sanford, Jr. (wife, Regina); and two step-daughters; three brothers, Sylvester Williams (Geraldine); Ryan Keith Cotton (Jennifer); and Conley Paul Cotton; three special sisters in Christ, Gwen Turner (Terry); Janice Foster; and Della Butler; a special cousin, Truman Cotton (Wanda); and a special brother-in-law, Larry W. McKee (Theresa); one remaining uncle, Woodrow Sanford; a special god-daughter, Keyaira Henry; a surrogate mother, Essie May Hamilton; ten grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends; and last but not least, her "personal angel" Nancy Johnson.Visitation will be from 11 am until 1 pm Saturday, August 20, at Immanuel Baptist Church. Mrs. Betty Jean Clay, 68 of Harlan departed this life on Tuesday June 21, 2011 at the Harlan App. Reg. Hospital. She was a native of Louellen, KY and a member of MT. Olive Baptist Church where she attended service and participated in any way as often as her health would allow.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Tommie Lee Menter and William Menter; one son, Dexter Alvin (Mills) Menter; two daughters, Beverly and LaJean Clay; two brothers, Donald Menter (Betty) and Christopher Columbus Menter (Jackie); grandmother, Alberta McElhaney (Fulton); Granddaddy, Rev. C.C. Cannon and aunt Minnie Dupree.

She is survived by one son, Michael A. Clay (Bobbie), Middlesboro; two daughters, Donna Lisa Clay, Harlan and Sheila Custard (Billy), Cynthiana, KY; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews; four sisters, Edna Tentman (Charlie), Cincinnati, OH; Bertha Martin (Arnold), Dayton, OH; Juanita Gibbs (Bill), Patterson, New Jersey; adopted sister, Rose Ellison, Lexington, KY; four brothers, Lucius Menter (Viola), Cincinnati, OH; Mohyiddin Menter (Willie), Milwaukee, Wisc; William Honyard, Milwaukee, Wisc; Rosevelt Newman, Patterson, New Jersey; two aunts, Fronie Hollis, Patterson, New Jersey; Ethel Menter, South Carolina; loving and supporting friends, Phyllis and Tom Paul Johnson, Bettie Gayles,Tammy Short, Janie Phillips and a host of

Betty Clay was a loving mother and father figure to her four children. Her pleasure in life was serving the Lord, enjoying friends and family and working her puzzle books. Betty never met a stranger and always had a smile with a loving kind word.

Visitation will be 6-9 P.M. Sunday in the chapel of Harlan Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be 11:30 A.M. Monday June 27, 2011 at the Mt. Olive Baptist Church with Pastor Walter M. Garlington and Pastor Lucius Menter, Sr. officiating.

Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Keith, KY. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

Elmer Eugene Barnes
  • BORN: September 9, 1942 DIED: May 22, 2011

  • RESIDENCE: Detroit, MI
THI::OBITUARY _ Elmer Eugene Barnes was born in Harlan, Kentucky on September 9, 1942 to the union of Oliver Eugene and Daisy Opal Barnes. He was one of eight children. His parents; one brother, Millard; and one sister, Dorris proceeded him in death.

Elmer confessed Christ at an early age and attended Triumph-The Church and Kingdom of God in Christ of Harlan, KY. He went on to graduate from Rosenwald High School in Harlan, KY, where he served in the school band and on the basketball team. Shortly after graduating, he joined the United States Army in 1960. He served his country for several years and recei ved an honorable discharge in 1966.

After leaving the military, he moved to Detroit, Michigan, where he met the love of his life, CherryI "Shay" Woods. They were united in holy matrimony on April 26, 1969. Two sons were born to this union. He was an electrician by tmde, he worked in the warehouse for Geneml Electric Supply Company, and served as the Union Steward for 27 years before retiring. A lover of sports, Elmer coached several basketball and softball teams over the years and won numerous championships and awards.

Elmer joined Chapel Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan in 1979 underthe leadership of Pastor Roy A.Allen Sr., now tmder the leadership of Reverend R. LaMont Smith, his pastor whom he loved dearly. He shared many wonderful hours expressing his love for his church and his family. Knowing that his body was getting weary, he tried to continue doing all he could until his health would not allow, having served as the Chair of the Recreation Committee and Co-Chair of the Trustee Board.

Elmer leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife, three sons: Brian

K. Jones (Gloria) of San Diego, CA,Troy Anthony (Angela) of Indianapolis. IN, and Tracy Eugene of Zionsville, IN; one daughter: Monita Worthington of Louisville, KY; five siblings: Reverend Kenneth (Shelby) Barnes of Harlan, KY, Harold (Louise) Barnes of Detroit, MI, Lela (Samuel) Norris of Lathrup Village, MI, Lois (Victor) Payne of Westland, MI,and Billy Barnes of Romulus, MI; two brothers-in-law: two sisters-in-law: six grandchildren: Maria, David,Ally,Trinity, Lacy, and Julian; and a host of nieces, nephews. cousins, and close friends.

Elmer was blessed to have two church mothers: Catherine Banks and Katie Hurt; adopted niece Lapan Fisher; and four close friends and caregivers: Deacon Charles Jackson, Trustee Henry Matthew, Trustee Hosiah Brooks, and Deacon Virgil Cook.

Mary Ann Mitchem
February 20, 1937 — April 21, 2011

Mary Ann Mitchem was born February 20, 1937 in

Columbus, MS to motherAlice Thomas and father

Lester Thomas Sr. After graduating from Rosenwald High

in Harlan, KY in 1955, she married Herman Mitchem in 1956

and moved to Minneapolis, MN. Their daughter Sallie was

born in 1957, and 13 years later in 1970 they adopted their

son Robert.Mary workedfor Sears and Roebuck for 25 years

and retired from her data entry position in 1987. She decided to

continue her education at MCC and earned a degree in Early Childhood

Development in 1992, which led to her position at Sabathani Community

Center in the Early Childhood Development department.

She remained there for the next 10 years, also serving as a board member.

Mary’s relationship with the Lord lasted a lifetime, and she always kept

her faith close to her. She was a charter member of Macedonia Baptist Church

and an active member of the choir, the Constitution

Committee, and a chaperone at the National Baptist Youth Congress for many years with

her best friend Grace Belton and Deacon Chadwick. Mary loved to attend gospel music

workshops in town, do arts and crafts for Vacation Bible School, and participate

in many other activities that enriched her community. Outside of church,

Mary belonged to many organizations including the Red Hat Society, the Luncheon Club,

and Wednesday and Friday bowling leagues. She loved the Vikings and the Timberwolves,

hated the Packers, and was an avid sports fan throughout her lifetime.
Her love for the Lord, her family, and her community was evident in her life, and she used

those experiences to become the Matriarch of her family and a pillar of her community.

On April 21, 2011, the Lord called Mary home to him. She leaves behind her husband Herman; daughter Sallie; son Robert (spouse Susan); brother Lester Thomas Jr. (spouse Bessie); sisters Bertha and Faye (spouse John); father Lester Thomas Sr. (spouse Sarah); grandchildren Julian, Jasmine, Zachary and Chelsea; godchildren Eddie, Brian, Roderick and Trevor; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Mary also formed a special lifetime bond with a group of friends who served as a support system and called themselves “the Minnesota family.” Those bonds still hold tight today. Many friends and loved ones will miss her bright smile, infectious laugh, and love for life.

Mr. "Doc" Gray, What a teacher, what a coach, what a man! He will be missed by all whose life that he touched. But, most of all by the Legacy of students, team players, friends and teachers who remember when he arrived on the "scenes at Rosenwald School" fresh out of college, 22 years old, and ready to take on the world. We love you Doc. Thanks for all those awesome years in Harlan.

ROBERT MAJOR:


Robert Richard Major, 61, Harlan, passed from this life on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2010 following an illness. Born at Lejunior, Robert was a lifelong resident of Harlan County. He was employed with Mountain Construction Company since 1981.

Robert enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing and gardening; and was a fan of U.K. Basketball. He was known by friends and associates as "Dawg".

In 1969, Robert joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam where he received several medals, including an Army Commendation Medal with V-Device for heroism. He earned the ranking of Sergeant while he was in the military.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clarence Major, Sr. and Ida Belle Major; and his grandparents, Chappy Lee and Savannah Lee.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy B. Major; four sons, Vennice "Smokey" Major, of Lexington; Robert C. Major, of Louisville; Rodrick R. Major and Deron L. Major, both of Harlan; one brother, Clarence Major II, of Harlan; three sisters, Geneva Bankhead, of Cleveland, OH; Lillie Mae Howard, of Morristown, TN; and Shirley Daniels, of Harlan; seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Entered Eternal Rest on Friday, January 29, 2010 at the Hospice Care Center in Lexington. Mr. Fluker was well known and loved in the Harlan area where he stayed active until his health failed. He worked for many years at the former Roy’s Dry Cleaners at Evarts. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, North Main Street, Harlan.

Mr. Fluker was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanette Robinson Fluker; a daughter, Barbara Fluker James; a son, Willy Ernest Fluker; and a brother, Samuel R. Fluker.

Survivors include seven children, Billy Fluker, of Alabama; Phyllis Johnson, Douglas A. Fluker, Eunice Hicks, all of Lexington; Winfred Fluker, of Cleveland, OH; Samuel Fluker and Tracy Lynn Fluker, both of Harlan; 27 grandchildren; 52 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren. Also, his extended family: four sons, Robert Sanford, Duncan Jacobs, Terry Jacobs and Lewis McKey; and daughter, Paula Patton, all of Harlan; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends.

Donald E. Williams, 72 Passed January 14, 2009, in Gagley, LA.   Aruil 30, 1937 - January 14, 2009.

Clarence Wesley Blaine, 67,
of Verda, departed this life Sunday, October 25, 2009 at Holston Valley Medical Center in Kingsport. He was born in Harlan County on February 21, 1942, one of twelve children, to George and Beatrice Blaine. Clarence was a Veteran of the U.S. Army with over 20 years of service. His many decorations include the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Vietnam Service Medal with 5 Bronze Service Stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Army Commendation Medal, 3 Overseas Bars and Good Conduct Medal. He was of the Baptist faith.

The Blaine family will receive friends on Friday, Oct. 30, from 11 am until 1 pm at the First Street Baptist Church, North Main Street in Harlan.

Mrs. Anna Fitzgerald, 85, of Harlan, entered into the Joys of Heaven on Thursday at the Morristown-Hamblen Hospital in Morristown, TN following an illness.

Anna was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest Fitzgerald, Sr.; her parents, Rev. A.R. Cobb and Fannie Kelly Cobb; son, Ernest Fitzgerald, Jr.; daughter, Jackie Smith; son-in-law, James Butler.

Among her surviving relatives are her daughters, Della Butler, Teresa Gholston, Sonya Blanton and Audrey Farrow; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and a host of other loved ones and friends. A complete obituary will be provided in the Tuesday edition of The Enterprise.

The wake for Mrs. Anna Fitzgerald will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept.1 at the First Baptist Church in Harlan.
