I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone attending the 17th bi-ennial reunion in Atlanta last month. I think that I speak for the entire Middle Georgia Chapter when I tell you how much fun we had - and how exhausting it was! We have so much to be thankful for as we move forward into our 38th year of existence. Next year's Annual Meeting will be held in Harlan. Let's make it a real Old Fashioned Homecoming. Start making your plans now to go home next summer! I would also like to challenge each of you to give generously to the organization. Our new President suggested that every member make a $100 donation to our organization each year. I support that suggestion fully. Even if you've never participated , start now.

One more thing. If you've ever wondered what happened to an old friend from Rosenwald or want to catch up on what's happening in Harlan, check out the video documentary that Ray Mason just completed. He has put together a wonderful document that tells the story of Harlan and Rosenwald. Click on Video Documentary under WHAT'S NEW! at the top of this page.

From the Office of the Chaplin,

My friends, we would like to extend our prayers regarding the recent illness and surgery of Arper Tentman Jr. We ask that everyone pray for him and his family during this trying time. We pray that God will keep him and carry him through.

On behalf of the Chaplin's Office, we wish to welcome our new president, Lester Williams. We want him to know that the chaplin's office is anxious to work with him in carrying the Rosenwald Harlanites into the future.

We would also like to express our heartfelt thanks to our outgoing president, Victor Payne. Thanks for all your years of service.

We are praying all of our members who have gone on to be with the Lord. If anyone wishes prayer from the chaplin's office, let us know and we will be more than willing to go to the Lord for you or a loved one.

Greetings, everyone! I have been given the task of updating the mailing list used to send newsletters last year. We received a total of 57 returned pieces of mail and in looking over the list, it's obvious that some addresses have simply not been updated. Being that the reunion is just around the corner and we do not want to miss getting the information out to even one person who might attend, I am appealing to all of you for help. I've attached the list of the return mail recepients, names only, and I need your help. Please take a moment to review the list and if you see the name of a person that you know how to reach, please do so and have them contact me via e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , mail: Frances (Edrina Mason) Byrd at 168 Chadwick Drive; Macon, Georgia 31210 or phone: 478-474-4510.

Hi Everyone! Kind of at a loss for words but thankful for the opportunity to open a door for future contacts with those from my past days. I am retired now and have my time given to me for doing my own thing. Would love to hear from anyone that remembers some of the wonderful days of Harlan County and Rosenwald High School. God Bless...Joe Clyde ( This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it )

My mother attended/graduated from Rosenwald High School. Her name is Wilma Dean McKethren (many know her as: Boone). I am her youngest daughter. (My nickname is: Skip. I am signing the guest book for 2 reasons. (1) I would like to invite everyone to my wedding on May 24th 2008 @ the Greater Mount Siani Baptist Church on 1st Street in Lynch, Ky. I am marrying Michael Stewart. He is the son of Anna Stewart and Otis Garner from Lynch, Kentucky. It is an open wedding and everyone is invited. Please come and enjoy and also get a chance to see some old friends. My second reason (2). My fiance and I are travel agents, so I would like you all to go to our website and book your trip(s) to the Rosenwald Reunion in July. You can book your hotel, car, and also airline. Please go to www.warmmorningtravel.com. Thanking you in advance and looking forward to seeing everyone in 2008.
Sis. Essie Hamilton/Sis. Vanessa Manning, December 23, 2007
The office of the Chaplin would like to invite anyone who would like to express a fond memory or words for those Harlanites who have gone on to be with the Lord in the past year.

I would like to thank everyone who expressed sympathy at the lost of my youngest brother. I tought I would never get through that time, but God promised me that his Grace was sufficent to get me through whatever I needed. And he did. Thank you Robert Lee. I will always look to your spirit for the help you'd always provide.
Sis. Essie Hamilton/Sis. Vanessa Manning, December 23, 2007
From the Office of the Chaplin,

The holidays are a special time to learn, love and share with those we love. We must remember the real reason for the season; to celebrate the life of Christ. We would like to wish each and everyone of you a very prosperous year.

The bible says in 3 John 2, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prosperth.

So, from the family of the Rosenwald Harlanites, Inc. to yours, have a wonderful new year.

See you in ATLANTA!
Audrey Farrow, September 07, 2007
My son (Thomas Farrow) has just received a scholarship from the Rosenwald Harlanites, and I just wanted to say "THANK YOU - SO MUCH". You have NO idea how much this will help my child attend a 4-year college out of state. Again, thank you.

My father (Ernest Fitzgerald Sr.) and many other family members attended Rosenwald - and from the stories that I hear - it was the BEST!!!!

I had to take a moment to express my graditute for the help you are providing my child.

Thanks again
Audrey Fitzgerald Farrow
Essie Mae Hamilton / Vanessa, July 11, 2007
We would like to thank everyone who expresses their sympathy and prayer at the loss of my youngest son Robert. My family heard your prayers and want to reach out and thank each and everyone of you.
The Rosenwald Harlanites have been and will always be my second family. Being the chaplin, I can always think of what to say or how to express myself to comfort those in the time of bereavement. But when it's your turn, what do you do. What do you say. Our faith has brought us through this ordeal just as it has brought us through before and will do so in the future.
On behalf of my family I do thank you.

Praise the Lord people

I was made aware of this site by my cousin, Maria Barnes Lawson on 1/29/06. I instantly checked the site out and read everything on it...I was/am so excited. The last post was so long ago that I wonder if it is still up and running. Maria was visiting our great aunt, Ruby Thompson, who turned 100 on said date. I guess I had not seen Maria for more than 40 years...seems like yesterday. Someone let me know if this site is still active, since I know at least 75% of the people listed. God bless

I am the daughter of the National Chaplin, Essie Hamilton. I'm also a recipient of one of the first schorlarships from the Rosenwald Harlanites. That scholarship paved the way for me to be what I am today, A Licensed Registered Nurse with (3) degrees.
I am proud to be apart of such an organization that feels more like family than an organization. God has chosen you. Each and everyone of you to do just as he plans, and everything is going according to his plans. The Rosenwald Harlanites will always be apart of me just as I am a part of them.
I just want to say, even after all these years, Thank You for helping me to be the person God has created me to be.

Greetings!

I am the daughter of Juanita (Anderson)Coffey who lives in Somerset, KY. Growing up, I remember my Mom talking about where she went to school and it always brought a smile to her face. I attended a gathering with her in Harlan back in the late 80's.

I remember looking through her year book when I was in elementary school and, if memory serves me correctly, there was a Poem or something written (it might have been a class poem). I don't remember but I think it may have been titled Ode to Rosemwald. It went something like this...Dear ole Rosenwald we are blue since we have to say adew tis so sad in leaving friends who were faithful till the end...

I have always thought it was beautiful.

I will let my Mom know that I found this site and will keep her posted. I don't know what year she gradated but I was born in 1951.

If she has the information, if it is the Lords willing, I will make sure she makes this Class Reunion since it is only 78 miles from Somerset. Until then,I am...

Like the Phoenix I have come from the ashes. I know that I have been out of touch for a long period of time but I am still here and the spirit of the Rosenwald Harlanites still course through my blood. I know that there are still many of my former classmates that have not heard from me nor have seen me at past reunions but I am still around and in pretty good health this is my E-Mail address and I am more than anxious to stay in contact with fellow Harlanites give a shoutout to Billy Ray, Aubrey, Nawanna, Wanda Kathrine and all the class of 1963 the last class standing. Thank God that I finally got the moxie to sign the questbook. I am still hear and will see each and everyone at the next reunion May God bless and keep each and every one of you

Hi Everyone!
Just checking the site. Noticed there has not been an entry in this New Year of 2006.
First, I'm happy to be alive and thank God that I'm able to function on my own.
My heart is heavy about the recent homegoing of George Mills and Delores Body. (two of my classmates).
I am looking forward to seeing a lot of you in Lexington this year. Until then, God's blessings to each of you.
