Alaska --

When you hear about the new health reform law these days, too much talk is focused on the political.

What I've found is that most Americans just want to know how this new law helps their families stay healthy -- and how it reduces their costs.

The first thing I tell people who ask about the Affordable Care Act is that, for moms like me, it makes our lives easier. It gives families control over their own care. And it gives us the comfort of knowing that our insurance will be there when we need it most -- especially if we get sick. Then I tell them that it gets better, but there's a lot to know. To help, this administration has set up HealthCare.gov, where folks can see customized information about how care will improve for their families.

So much of what makes this law great is its emphasis on preventive care -- right now, too many people aren't getting the check-ups or the screenings they need to stay healthy. Twelve percent of kids haven't seen a doctor in the past year. And 59 million adults -- and 11 million children -- depend on an insurance plan that does not cover basic immunizations.

Health reform is changing that. Under this new law, all new private plans will provide basic preventive services -- things like childhood immunizations and checkups, mammograms, colonoscopies, cervical screenings, and treatment for high blood pressure -- absolutely free of charge. No copay. No deductible. No co-insurance needed.

And, on HealthCare.gov, you can not only learn what preventive steps will help keep your family healthy, but also what insurance coverage options are available based on your needs.

A focus on prevention will help us to combat diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure -- chronic illnesses that right now lead to seven of ten deaths in the United States and 75 percent of our national health care costs.

And it will help us tackle an issue that is dear to my heart -- childhood obesity. As some of you know one of my top priorities as First Lady is the Let's Move! campaign, where we have made it our goal to put a stop to the challenge of childhood obesity within a generation, so children who are born today grow up at a healthy weight.

Each of us needs to take responsibility for our own health and the health of our families, and the new health reform law can help. That's why I'm writing today -- to make sure you and Americans across the country know how their health plans are getting better day by day under reform.

Please visit HealthCare.gov and find out more about your care:

Thank you,

Michelle Obama

NEW TRAFFIC LAW 2010 - TICKET COST $754.00!!!

GOOD THING TO KNOW: New Law: If a patrol car is pulled over to the side
of the road, you have to change to the next lane (away from the stopped
vehicle) or slow down by 20 mph. Every state except Hawaii, Maryland and
D.C. has this law. In California , the "Move-over" law became operative
on January 1, 2010.

A friend's son got a ticket for this recently. A police car (turned out
it was 2 police cars) was on the side of the road giving a ticket to
someone else. He slowed down to pass but did not move into the other
lane. The second police car immediately pulled him over and gave him a
ticket. He had never heard of the law. It is a fairly new law that
states if any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are
able, you are to move into the far lane.

The cost of the ticket was $754, with 3 points on your license and a
mandatory court appearance. Please let everyone you know that drives
about this new law. It is true, see details at the following web
address: http://www.moveoveramerica.com/ smilies/shocked.gif smilies/shocked.gif

I am requesting African Americans sign up as bone marrow donors. Only 500,000 are registered, as compared to 5,000,000 caucasians. No pain is involved to get tested. The cost is waived for AA. The test is performed by swabbing the mouth (cheeks); placing it in a kit provided by the registry and mailing it at no cost. This can help save a number of lives. A young lady who has a Kentucky connection is in need of a donor. She has leukemia. Can you forward this to Rosenwald Harlanites? I will gladly forward the kit . The maximum age of a donor is 60. Thanks for helping save lives.

Hi Everyone,
Boomer and I are now in Michigan. We are having a blast with our grandparents, Les & Rhoda! When I get to the point of thinking of what college to go to, I hope you will help me. I’m thinking of being an author for your Teen Corner.

Buck is a black cockapoo, this morning 4/16/09, I took him for a walk, he is so energetic. One day, I want a dog like Buck. Thank you and hope to see everyone in Kentucky this summer.

Alaska got some presents for his birthday. He is enjoying them. He also walked Buck.

Sincerely,
Tawnee Williams

Hi Loretta Strode Evans,
We go back to Harlan every two years for our Rosenwald Harlanites annual meeting. It will be in July 2009. Come join us. It's a small reunion. We would love to see you there.
Phyllis Mason Kennedy, August 26, 2008
Congratulations Lester on your election as President of the Rosenwald Harlanites! It's your time and it's your turn. That's a powerful combination! You've got my support.

Someone once said that there are three kinds of people--those who watch things happen; those who make things happen; and those who say, "what happened?"

Lester has the finese and the desire to take this organization to another level . . . People, this train is moving and there are still seats available. You don't want to miss this train. It's time for all Harlanites to get involved.
Loretta Strode Evans, August 23, 2008
i enjoy the Rosenwald Harlanites websites. I haven't been back to Harlan County since I left in 1949. I do hope to make it back someday.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone attending the 17th bi-ennial reunion in Atlanta last month. I think that I speak for the entire Middle Georgia Chapter when I tell you how much fun we had - and how exhausting it was! We have so much to be thankful for as we move forward into our 38th year of existence. Next year's Annual Meeting will be held in Harlan. Let's make it a real Old Fashioned Homecoming. Start making your plans now to go home next summer! I would also like to challenge each of you to give generously to the organization. Our new President suggested that every member make a $100 donation to our organization each year. I support that suggestion fully. Even if you've never participated , start now.

One more thing. If you've ever wondered what happened to an old friend from Rosenwald or want to catch up on what's happening in Harlan, check out the video documentary that Ray Mason just completed. He has put together a wonderful document that tells the story of Harlan and Rosenwald. Click on Video Documentary under WHAT'S NEW! at the top of this page.

Greetings, everyone! I have been given the task of updating the mailing list used to send newsletters last year. We received a total of 57 returned pieces of mail and in looking over the list, it's obvious that some addresses have simply not been updated. Being that the reunion is just around the corner and we do not want to miss getting the information out to even one person who might attend, I am appealing to all of you for help. I've attached the list of the return mail recepients, names only, and I need your help. Please take a moment to review the list and if you see the name of a person that you know how to reach, please do so and have them contact me via e-mail: This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it , mail: Frances (Edrina Mason) Byrd at 168 Chadwick Drive; Macon, Georgia 31210 or phone: 478-474-4510.

My mother attended/graduated from Rosenwald High School. Her name is Wilma Dean McKethren (many know her as: Boone). I am her youngest daughter. (My nickname is: Skip. I am signing the guest book for 2 reasons. (1) I would like to invite everyone to my wedding on May 24th 2008 @ the Greater Mount Siani Baptist Church on 1st Street in Lynch, Ky. I am marrying Michael Stewart. He is the son of Anna Stewart and Otis Garner from Lynch, Kentucky. It is an open wedding and everyone is invited. Please come and enjoy and also get a chance to see some old friends. My second reason (2). My fiance and I are travel agents, so I would like you all to go to our website and book your trip(s) to the Rosenwald Reunion in July. You can book your hotel, car, and also airline. Please go to www.warmmorningtravel.com. Thanking you in advance and looking forward to seeing everyone in 2008.

The office of the Chaplin would like to invite anyone who would like to express a fond memory or words for those Harlanites who have gone on to be with the Lord in the past year.

I would like to thank everyone who expressed sympathy at the lost of my youngest brother. I tought I would never get through that time, but God promised me that his Grace was sufficent to get me through whatever I needed. And he did. Thank you Robert Lee. I will always look to your spirit for the help you'd always provide.
Sis. Essie Hamilton/Sis. Vanessa Manning, December 23, 2007
From the Office of the Chaplin,

The holidays are a special time to learn, love and share with those we love. We must remember the real reason for the season; to celebrate the life of Christ. We would like to wish each and everyone of you a very prosperous year.

The bible says in 3 John 2, Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prosperth.

So, from the family of the Rosenwald Harlanites, Inc. to yours, have a wonderful new year.

See you in ATLANTA!
Audrey Farrow, September 07, 2007
My son (Thomas Farrow) has just received a scholarship from the Rosenwald Harlanites, and I just wanted to say "THANK YOU - SO MUCH". You have NO idea how much this will help my child attend a 4-year college out of state. Again, thank you.

My father (Ernest Fitzgerald Sr.) and many other family members attended Rosenwald - and from the stories that I hear - it was the BEST!!!!

I had to take a moment to express my graditute for the help you are providing my child.

Thanks again
Audrey Fitzgerald Farrow
Essie Mae Hamilton / Vanessa, July 11, 2007
We would like to thank everyone who expresses their sympathy and prayer at the loss of my youngest son Robert. My family heard your prayers and want to reach out and thank each and everyone of you.
The Rosenwald Harlanites have been and will always be my second family. Being the chaplin, I can always think of what to say or how to express myself to comfort those in the time of bereavement. But when it's your turn, what do you do. What do you say. Our faith has brought us through this ordeal just as it has brought us through before and will do so in the future.
On behalf of my family I do thank you.
